Default PS3 Price Could Remain High Until 2008

A recent interview with Sony reveals the price of the PS3 is unlikely to drop for longer than we thought.

Those waiting for a lower-priced PS3 may be waiting alonger than expected. While the price of the PS2 dropped soon after released, from $299 to $199 in the U.S., just 565 days after the launch, the PS3 may not enjoy a price drop for some time. According to Tretton, the higher cost of research and development for the PS3 makes the console "a lot more difficult to cost reduce" than the PS2.

"There's a heck of a lot more under the hood and it costs us more money to make it", said Tretton.

Despite the high cost of development and production, Tretton was adamant that the continued high price of the console would not hurt sales in the long run:

"I think the consumers that get their hands on a PlayStation 3 clearly see the value and not only want to buy one for $599, in some instances they're willing to pay ridiculous prices to buy one on eBay."

However, according to our research, the PS3 is no longer selling on Ebay for more than retail. The "rediculous prices" Tretton mentioned were rather short-lived after the launch, and there are now piles of PS3s sitting in retail stores unpurchased.

What all of this means is the PS3 could remain at its current price until mid-2008.

Do you think it can survive that long at the current price, with the Xbox 360 already selling for $100 less, and price cut rumors looming for both the 360 and the Wii towards the end of this year?

People have been wondering if they will cut the price . If they aren't selling they probably will. They won't remove Blu-Ray I can assure you that because they really want that to succeed. I don't think they ever intended UMD to make more money than it did, but they are banking a lot on HD.

What you're forgetting is that Sony produces the Blu Ray and UMDs. That's how Sony isn't going bankrupt from this. Sony won't need to drop prices.

If no one has the machines to play them on, they can make all they want and won't make any money.
