Playstation 3 rumors that it doesnt play old ps2 games?

Hey I was just about to buy a PS3 when on my way to Best Buy i was getting gas, and i saw my neighbor. He said that the PS3's had errors in them, since they tried so hard to get production done quickly, that they didn't give them the capability to be backwards compatible. Is this true?????
