Default Why did Sony make the new ps3 models not able to play ps1 and ps2 games?

I though that was really unique, that you could play one consoles games on another but in my opinion they messed up when they didn't do that to the ps3. I bought the new model because i heard the old one was a piece of crap and that those who waited in lines to pay 700+ dollars for the ps3 when it came out just wasted money.
