how do you download games to your hard drive on a Nintendo wii?

my wife just bought me one and I know nothing about it. before the wii my most current system was a Nintendo 64 (yeah I am old school) but I have heard you can download old school games to the wii. how do you do this?

Stick a firecracker in the gamecube controller ports on the top, let it do it's stuff and go buy a PS3
