Will altering the hard drive of a ps3 mean loosing game data?

i've got a 60GB ps3 (chunky old style) and need a bigger hard drive. If i was to replace it would I loose all my saved game data and if so is there anyway to get more space for games without loosing the old stuff e.g. external hard drive (i've heard they dont store game data)
