Default Can I use my old PS3 hard drive as an external hard drive to get my data off it?

I recently had my PS3 repaired after it had the Yellow Light Of Death, it had to be sent away to Sony as it needed a new part. From what i know the hard drive is 'married' the the Console and I've been told that because there is a new part that the system will want to format the hard drive and delete all of my data. Because of this I bought a new hard drive before i sent the console away so that if it was formatted at the repair center i would not loose my data. I was wondering if i could use the old hard drive as an external hard drive to get my data off it.

Thanks heaps
