Can I watch movies off of an external HD via a ps3?

I am considering buying a ps3 and was wondering if you can watch digital movies by plugging in an external hard drive via usb.

yup. just make sure that the file type can be read on the ps3. I believe most common file types are playable on the ps3 though. So yes you can watch digital movies via external harddrives, can also view pictues and music too.
