I turn on my ps3, plug in the usb to the ps3 and controller, press the ps button once and the controller works WHILE PLUGGED IN but take the usb out and it no longer works. I have two of them and I can't get either to work so this leads me to believe that I'm doing something wrong. Please help I love these controllers but it sucks playing corded.

Are they sony controllers? are they bluetooth? do you have them registered if they are bluetooth under Accessories settings in the xmb menu? these are all things that might be wrong, ive never tried to register a Controller that isn't sony so i dint know if it will work wirelessly. i hope this helps
