Can the old Playstation controllers work for the new Playstation 3?

I have some friends who need an extra controller for their Playstation 3. I have an old Playstation 1, and I don't use it anymore. If I gave them my controllers will they work?

Well you could but you will have to buy an adapter which are like around $6 on ebay and that it can convert and be playable on the ps3 but in that situation i would just rather buy another ps3 controller b/c it's wireless so people won't be tripping over the wires if you know where im getting at.
