Default PS3 External Hard Drive Question?

I have a 40 gig ps3. The hard drive space in this thing is freakin ridiculously small. I don't have any external hard drive to back up my save files to. If I did, I would back them up and buy a new hard drive for the PS3. Instead, I was wondering if I could buy an external hard drive and copy my save files to that in order to free up the initial hard drive space. Any help on this topic would be MUCH appreciated. I have save files from games like Oblivion and Fallout 3, which take up about 5 gigs a piece. I just need to know how I can give myself more space and what methods I have available to me because I don't want to screw anything up. Thanks.

Edit: I will NEVER own a crappy 360. I don't enjoy throwing my money away on a system that is pretty much guaranteed to break down on me. Also, the PS3 is a MUCH better system. And to the other guy, I don't know if you saw, but I have a FORTY GIG. Meaning, I don't have the sd slots or anything. Just 2 USB ports. And I already said that I didn't want to risk screwing anything up so I'm not interested in swapping the internal hard drive. Cmon people

any usb external hard drive will work.. just plug it in one of the ports.

Or you can buy a 2.5inch laptop hard drive and install it in your PS3..not recommended for warranty though, because it will void it!

the only external drives that a PS3 would recognize are tumb drives or USB drives. You can save the info to those and then transfer them to your larger external Harddive via a computer or laptop. the PS 3 only recognizes SD cards or USB thumb drives ... it won't pick up large external harddrives.
