Default Help with with connecting the PS3's sixaxis controller . . .?

I cant seem to get my controller to connect, the screen says, "Connect your Controllers with a USB cable then press the PS button" So I connected it with the usb cable pressed the PS button and checked and all the controller was doing was flashing lights, so I waited a while and the controller shut off. I just got my PS3 yesterday, and its was working perfectly fine then so I dont know, any help would be really appreciated.

Shut off the PS3 on the back. Plug in the Sixaxis via USB, turn on the PS3 on the back, then press the on button on the front of the console. The controller automatically connects. Leave it plugged in until you can press the PS button and it says "Charge Complete" then you can use it wireless. Sometimes, if the battery is really low, you need to do this.

First turn off the System then plug i into the usb. Now turn on the PS3 and the 4 red bars should be flashing on the controller so it charges.
