Default How can I successfully upgrade the hard drive in my PS3?

I recently tried installing a larger hard drive on my 80gb phat PS3. When I put it in it says upon startup that it can't run properly and I need to put the latest firmware on a flash device that it can read off of and update. I put the latest firmware (version 4.0) on a flash drive using the PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP directory and plugged it into the usb port. It searched for like 10 minutes and then said "No applicable update data found" What can I do? I don't have another hard drive that has the firmware on it. Am I screwed?

Yes the flash drive FAT32. I've also tried writing the firmware to a cd for the ps3 to read off of. No luck. Is it an issue with the most recent firmwar? (4.0)
