How do I get my ps3 controller to work?

When I turn on my controller, and with the ps3 on. I plugged the usb cord into it all 4 red lights flash really fast although it won't charge it or anything, and the 1 is supposed to be lit a solid red so I tried resetting it, and removed my blue tooth headset like it said on their website, nothing worked, and it's a dual shock 3 controller, I've never had this problem before.

I bought the whole equipment back in 2009.

Sounds like the blutooth transmitter inside has gone bad. Try turning off the ps3 and with the controller connected try powering it on with only useing the ps Button

the bluetooth isnt the problem. ps3 controller even isnt bluetooth also. is the controller new or used?
