do ps2 games need a ps2 controller when playing on a ps3?

i love ps2 games and gamestop offers a buttload of games under so if i want to play them on my ps3 (late 2010 160gb slim) would i need a ps2 controller and those adapters to hook them up to the ps3? It would be much simpler to use my normal ps3 controller
