Ps3 controller won't connect with USB cable?!?

I'm having some problems with my ps3 which I just bought yesterday. I brought it hOme and turned it on, it told me to plug in the controller with the USB cable and I did so. When I pressed the PS button all four lights flash at the same time very fast for about five seconds and then stop? I tried resetting the controller and movIng it to a different port but no luck:/ I also tried to plug I into my PC, it showed up in my PC as unknown software and said it was malfunctioned device. I'm just wonderin if the problem is my controller? Or is there something I can do? Please help!

maybe the cable dosnt work, buy another one : ) , or go were you bought it and tell them the problem
