Default No solution to PS3 corrupt hard drive?

After one full week of searching the internet for hours I have come to the conclusion that my problem is unique and at this point not fixable. One day I turned on PS3 to see a blank screen so I held the power button as usual to try and reset settings. I was informed of corrupt data and clicked to restore. This is where the tricky part is. I can access my PS3 as if nothing were wrong but I am only notified of the corruption when I try to Restore File System. I get stuck at 68% when installing Fallout New Vegas. I have tried all safe mode options as well as a full format. Now I have bought a new hard drive and after a successful upgrade I am in the same situation. Is there really a problem or is my PS3 confused? If there is, is there a solution?
Thanks in advance.

I have the older 40 gb PS3 and have upgraded with a 2.5 SATA 5400 rpm
