fat 32 formatted usb external hard drive Question (PS3 Slim)?

i was watching a youtube video on how to back up your ps3 slim with an external usb hard drive and he said that "it also helps if your usb drive is already formatted in fat 32". What does that mean.

Also is it required to do that fat 32 thing when you back up your ps3?
